When is a metal sonorous?

Ulex replies
Books always say that metals, in sheet form, are sonorous but there are so many exceptions as to make the statement ridiculous. How about lead, for example. Does a dull thud count? Sodium and potassium just produce a soundless dent if you strike them.

Now, when huge lumps of copper-tin alloy are hung up in a church tower, they are gloriously sonorous. You ask: When? That's when!

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
