Describe chemical test that can be carried out in the laboratory to differentiate between ammonium chloride solution and zinc nitrate solution.

Corrie writes .....

One possible test (of many) to tell the difference would be:

Add dilute sodium hydroxide solution slowly to both solutions. The zinc nitrate solution will form a white precipitate (of zinc hydroxide), which will disappear on adding excess sodium hydroxide. The ammonium chloride solution will remain colourless - and smell of ammonia!

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
