Revision guides - which one do you like?
We are quite often asked to recommend a revision guide for the Nuffield course.
There are now some good revision notes by experienced teachers available free on-line - see the web guides in Beat the examiners.
There are also lots of printed revision guides on the market. The Philip Allan Updates ones are specifically for Nuffield Chemistry – so far covering Units 1 and 2 in the AS course and Unit 4 in the A2.
People can react very differently to the same guide, so we are asking you to comment. Please submit a comment to tell us about the way you revise and the web sites or publications you use.

The Halesowen CDs with videos of experiments are good for looking at them again. (See: http://vle.halesowen.ac.uk/nuffield).

I find the CGP books are excellent! they explain everything in OUR language so I can understand it! I have used them for chemistry and biology and they give me the confidance I need! I find the Letts books appalling though - tried to look up "initiation" and "propagation" and they weren't even in the index! They are bad for all subjects...

I use a Collins Do Brilliantly book and i have found it to be the best as it gives all the information in a clear way that is easy to understand. the explanations for some reactions are not really explained but then that is why the students book is there!!

The Philip Allan updates are very good for the Nuffield course, used in conjunction with the students book, you can't beat it!

I bought the Collins Revision Notes, which are already holepunched ready to put into the folder. I also use the Letts AS Revision guides. Collins has last minute revision, with just the needed stuff. Letts explains everything well!

I have found that the OXFORD REVISION GUIDES have some useful information but do not deal with all of the Nuffield sylabus.

Mike Dagless - Units 1 and 6 Revision Resource
I have written some topic work booklets for the Nuffield course to help you revise. For unit 1 (AS) to help you prepare for the exam. For unit 6 (A2) to help you prepare for the synoptic paper. Please e-mail mndag@aol.com for more details.

I managed to get an A at AS level and I think that even as a student, purchasing the Teacher's Guide from amazon.co.uk was significantly conducive to this grade. The Teacher's Guide has answers to ALL the questions (Topic Review + Exam) that are not in the Student's Book, and also has some useful information on experiments.

Jane Smith - Practical work for chemistry
I've just seen this new book published by Hodder which looks really good for help with investigations and how to get good marks.

I use a WHSmiths AS and A2 Revision Guide which, although suitable for any specification, has tables in the back saying what sections to learn for which exam boards. Not perfect but its OKk for general revision.

I did not use a revision guide for AS because I was worried about learning things that are not in the syllabus, or missing out bits. I found my notes and the students book were enough.

I have yet to find a revision guide to totally suit the Nuffield specification. None of the ones I have seen include experimental techniques or results.

The Letts revision guides are good, although they don't have any of the options in them. but good for the main part of the course. The Guide tells you what is in the course at the front.

I use the "Letts" revision guides. They have all the sections labelled for each syllabus so I just follow the Nuffield pages and it has all I need to know.

Does anyone know how to use Microsoft Excel so that I could use it for activation energy graphs?

The best revision guide for AS chemistry is definitely Collins - Do Brilliantly AS Chemistry (http://www.collins.co.uk/learn_do_brilliantly.asp). It has exam questions and answers plus sample answers from students with the mistakes ponted out and corrected. The guide offers lots of tips on what mistakes not to make and tells you all the key points to remember, including examiners tips. It really does make revising AS Chemistry a lot easier.

I find that "Chemistry in context" (by Graham Hill and John Holman) is very useful for the nuffield course.

Any general revision guide is fine. They can all expand your knowledge of the fundamentals of chemistry.
