 Covalent structures and bonding

Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

What kind of bonding will you find if Ca2+ as a centre ion forms a co-ordination compound with EDTA as ligand?

In a coordination complex a central atom or ion is coordinated by one or molecules or ions (ligands) which have lone pairs of electrons to form coordinate (or dative) bonds with the central atom or ion.

In the EDTA ion there are two nitrogen atoms and four negatively charged oxygen atoms (in carboxylate groups) that can form coordinate bonds with a central metal ion.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
