Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

I can't seem to find the data book figure for the activation enthalpy of the iodine + peroxodisulphate clock reaction (data books used: Stark + Wallace, and Salters Datasheets) Can you tell me the figure for this?

I cannot give you a databook value but I can give you a value from the teacher's book for the ILPAC text about Advanced Practical Chemistry (John Murray, 1997 - ISBN 0719575087). These values are based on results obtained under the same sorts of conditions that you are likely to be working.

Uncatalysed activation energy: 53 kJ/mol
Catalysed by iron(III) ions: 35 kJ/mol

The book quotes a value from an article in the School Science Review [1975, 57, (198)] for the catalysed reaction with iron(III) of 28 +/- 2 kJ/mol.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
