Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

This is about taking the text book into the unit 6 Nuffield Chemistry exam (Edexcel). Would it be acceptable to put coloured stickers or marks on the corners of pages to help me reference particular topics during the exam.

The Assessment Leader at Edexcel tells us:

Edexcel sent a letter out right at the start of the specification clarifying the position of "clean" texts. It read as follows:

Students' Book
Annotations made to the Students' Book must not add to the information contained within the text itself.

For example, it is acceptable for a candidate to remind him/herself to "refer to page #" for further information, but it is not acceptable for them to write answers to the questions asked at the end of topics, as this will provide additional information not contained within the text itself.

Highlighting text and making any corrections authorised by Nuffield are, of course, acceptable.

Book of data
Corrections authorised by Nuffield and highlighting text are allowed.
However, there should be no other annotation to any Book of data used for examination purpose.

Centres are required to check the textbooks to ensure that they meet these requirements before they are used in an examination. Annotations which add to the information contained within either text would be regarded as a breach of the regulations.

Markers
The use of coloured stickers/marks for easy reference would therefore be OK.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
