Rates of reaction - kinetics (A2)
Read our general notes on Risk Assessment
Is it possible to find the rate constants for a range of reactions online? They are not available in the data book (Revised Nuffield Advanced Science Book of Data). I was hoping in the same way that Kp, equilibrium constants, are in the book (page 124) for some reactions, the rate constants (and their units) are available for reactions at 298K. This would be very useful if you could tell me about such a set of data.

I too have often wanted to find rate and equilibrium constant data, but they have proved hard to find. After all, there are millions of reactions and presumably only a minority have been studied to arrive at such results. Here are three suggestions.
[1] You could access the website http://webbook.nist.gov/chemistry/, and use this very comprehensive online chemical database to see whether you can come up with something useful.
[2] You could use www.google.co.uk or www.google.com and use search phrases such as “rate constant” or “chemical rate constant”, etc. to see whether anything useful comes up.
[3] Finally, use your local reference library and look for the “CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics” published by the CRC Press. In our library the most recent edition is the 80th (1999-2000) - ISBN 0-8493-0480-6 - and I happen to know that many good town libraries also stock this publication. It is a massive book, about 3-4 inches thick, and contains a very large amount of scientific data, including rate and equilibrium constants for a range of reactions.
My guess is that you’ll have greatest success with option 3.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
