 Carboxylic acids and related compounds

Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

How do you distinguish between an ester and carboxylic acid using a chemical wet test. What reaction conditions would this reaction need?

Esters are not miscible with water but simple carboxylic acids are (eg ethanoic acid).

Shaking an ester with water does not change the pH. Acids lower the pH when they dissolve and the solution is acid enough to produce carbon dioxide with sodium hydrogencarbonate.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
