Hi, I have to plan an experiment to determine how a barium meal test will help to locate and diagnosis a stomach ulcer. Since barium compounds are poisonous, could it be used safely in the body?

You are correct, barium compounds are toxic, but the compound used for a barium meal, barium sulphate, is so insoluble (about 10-6 mol/100 g water) that it can safely be ingested during this medical procedure.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
