Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

I am using the iodine clock reaction for my investigation and am looking for suitable catalysts. I know that Cu(II) ions or Fe(II) ions are needed, but I'm not sure which compound to use. I am using potassium iodide, potassium peroxodisulphate, and sodium thiosulphate. I considered copper sulphate but was concerned about the impact the sulphate would have on the reaction. Could you suggest suitable catalysts, or how I should account for the sulphate if the copper sulphate catalyst were to be used?

I would be very surprised if the sulphate ion has any catalytic effect on the redox reactions in this experiment. Don't forget, sulphate ions are one of the products of the reaction anyway. I would go ahead with the catalysts you were intending to use.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
