What sort of value should the activation enthalpies be for catalase and manganese(IV) oxide when used as catalysts for the decomposition of H2O2?

My values are 65 kJ mol-1 for catalase and 30 kJ mol-1 for MnO2, but I'm sure these are wrong and I can't seem to find any data on them at all!

A value for catalase I have found in a data book is 23 kJ mol-1, whereas the value for the uncatalysed reaction is 75 kJ mol-1. No doubt the value for MnO2 will be somewhere in-between. Your values do seem the 'the wrong way around'.

All you can do (other than repeating your work), is to quote these values and comment on the differences, then discuss possible reasons for the differences you have found. Also have a look at previous FAQs on this subject on Re:act by putting hydrogen peroxide into the Re:act Search.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
