What does 'the basicity of an acid' mean? ...is it possible to express it as a value (calculate it)?

Basicity of an acid is an old term that sounds rather strange. Nowadays the terms 'monobasic' and 'dibasic' tend to be replaced by the terms 'monoprotic' and 'diprotic' etc, and they refer to the number of H's on an acid that can be removed by a base. Thus HCl is monobasic, H2SO4 is dibasic, H3PO4 is tribasic, and CH3COOH is monobasic.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
