Acid-base equilibria
Read our general notes on Risk Assessment
I've prepared two buffer solutions of pH 5.2 and 8.8. The acidic buffer was ammonia with ammonium chloride; and the base buffer was ethanoic acid with sodium ethanoate.
A pH meter was used to measure the values.
I was wondering why the pH 8.8 buffer was less stable over a period of time than many other buffers?

The alkaline buffer will smell strongly of ammonia and it will lose ammonia gas over a period of time, unless in a sealed container. Ethanoic acid is much less volatile.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
