How do spiral concentrators work? (I want to know this for Mineral process chemistry.)

Ulex replies…

I had a fascinating time in checking my facts by using a search engine and I suggest you do the same. The principle is essentially the same as a shaking table but the device is much more compact and appears to be portable. The basic idea is that the dense mineral concentrate accumulates in the spiral grooves whilst the lighter gangue is carried away by the wash water.

Use ‘Google’ and enter ‘Spiral concentrators’. You get a different set of sites if you enter ‘Spiral separators’ including a very readable one by ‘Archimedes’ (I knew he was ahead of his time, but this is ridiculous!)

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
