Carboxylic acids and related compounds
Read our general notes on Risk Assessment
I am having problems with the reactions of carboxylic acids - what is the balanced equation of the reaction between methanoic acid solution and calcium carbonate?
The reaction is no different in principle from any other acid-carbonate reaction:
acid + carbonate -> salt + carbon dioxide + water
In this instance the salt formed is calcium methanoate, Ca(HCO2)2.
With this information you should be able to balance the equation.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
