What is the order of reaction with respect to manganate(VII) ions in the reaction between manganate ions and ethanedioic acid?

Igloo replies ...
I believe that the order of reaction with respect to manganate(VII) ions is one.

I assume that you are carrying out your experiments in the presence of excess manganese(II) ions in order to counteract the autocatalysis which operates in this reaction.

This is a tricky reaction to study quantitatively because it is very slow at first, speeds up on warming to over 60 oC, and then gets faster because of catalytic action of the manganese(II) ions formed by the reaction.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
