Energy levels in atoms tutorial
This web site has a series of pages beginning with 'Elements as atoms' and running through until you get to 'The chemists' Perspective on the Periodic Table'. While you are working through the tutorial you will find that David's wizzy Periodic Table pops up in a window to show the electron configurations of atoms. The information is presented as a question and answer session of web applets to show the electron configurations of a range of atoms and how these relate to emission spectra (see Nuffield Advanced Chemistry Students' Book pages 54 - 57).
The web site can be a bit temperamental. It works much better with broadband access.

Ionisation energies tutorial
Jim Clark's Chemguide has some very helpful tutorials on key advanced chemistry topics. These tutorials are valuable because they are full of helpful tips and comments. They lead you step by step through the ideas.
This first tutorial by Jim Clark explains what is meant by the term ionisation energy and then goes on to explore the patterns of ionisation energies in the periodic table (see Nuffield Advanced Chemistry Students' Book pages 57 - 60)

Atomic structure tutorials
The next tutorial by Jim Clark explains atomic orbitals and how the way that electrons fill the orbitals gives rise to the electron configurations of elements.
The third tutorial explaining how to write the electron configurations using s, p and d notation (see Nuffield Advanced Chemistry Students' Book pages 60-61).
