Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

I've been looking everywhere but I can't find the data book values of the enthalpy change of combustion for ethanol, propan-1-ol, propan-2-ol and butan-1-ol.

I think you will have little trouble finding them at the bottom of p 107 of the Nuffield Book of Data – right hand page, first column headed DHc. Butan-1-ol is on the next double page spread.

If you do not have a data-book, then try the NIST on-line Chemistry WebBook. It takes a bit of getting used to. Type in the chemical formula, such as C2H5OH and then hit search. You are looking for ethanol, so click on that name and then select 'condensed phase thermochemistry data'. Scroll down to find the data you want. You will several values reported by different investigators.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
