What is hydrated iron(II) sulphate and what is it commonly used for?

Hydrated iron(II) sulphate has the formula, FeSO4 . 7H2O
 
Outside the laboratory iron(II) sulphate is used on soil to lower the pH.
 
Iron(II) sulphate is the main component of iron tablets. These are needed by some people suffering from anaemia to counteract their iron deficiency.
