Practical investigations
Read our general notes on Risk Assessment
I am currently carrying out an investigation to find the amount of vitamin C in foods. When I was trying to standardise my DCPIP the solution went from dark blue to colourless and not to pink. Is there something I am supposed to add? Please help!
Igloo replies
I do not think that there is anything to worry about. The product of the reaction is colourless, but in practice some coloured impurities in the dye often remain at the end-point – hence the pink colour. Perhaps you have been supplied with a particularly pure sample of the DCPIP dye.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
