Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

What pH are ethers, amides, esters, alcohols and amines.

Presumably you are asking what effect these compounds have on the pH of any solution formed when shaken with water.

Ethers, esters and alcohols are neutral. If they mix with water or dissolve they do not affect the pH of water.

Amines are bases. Primary amines are stronger bases than ammonia. Solutions of ammonia in water are alkaline with a pH about 8-9 depending on the concentration.

Amides are very weak bases. If soluble they do not affect the pH of water.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
