Do the Rf values of organic acids change depending on what solvent is used in thin layer plate chromatography or are they always the same?
Jenkin writes:
Yes, quoted Rf values always refer to a particular solvent and a particular stationary phase and will be different if the conditions are changed. The polarity of the solvent used is especially important. Remember that solvents used in chromatography are usually mixtures and you cannot predict Rf values, only find them using known standard samples.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
