Alkenes
Read our general notes on Risk Assessment
I am doing a presentation about the reaction between alkenes and concentarted sulphuric acid. Please may you tell me what the observations of the experiment are as I cannot find them anywhere.

One reference I have found says that the liquid (alkene) is slowly absorbed by the sulphuric acid in an exothermic reaction, with no other visible observations. It probably depends on exactly how you do it. My own experience (with cyclohexene) in practical classes is that the reaction can be quite vigorous, with some charring and bubbling occurring to give a brown, sticky mixture. No doubt there are side products as well as the expected addition to form a hydrogensulphate of the alkene.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
