How do I write a balanced redox reaction between NH3OH+ ions and Fe3+ ions?

Corrie writes ....
Let's write the two half-equations first:
1. Reduction: Fe3+ + e- -> Fe2+
2. Oxidation: 2NH3OH+ -> N2O + H2O + 6H+ + 4e-
Before adding the two half-equations together, the electrons lost and gained must balance. Therefore the first half-equation needs to be multiplied by 4. Then add the two half-equations together and the electrons should cancel out, leaving you with the balanced equation.
Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
