Read our general notes on Risk Assessment

If I conduct an experiment with 10.0 cm3 1.0M magnesium nitrate solution and an equal volume of 1.0M sodium carbonate solution and the temperature rises by 2 degrees what will the temperature rise if I used 50 cm3 of 1.0M solutions - is it the same increase due to the increase volume of solution needed to be heated or 10 degrees. - I am a little confused

Ulex comments:

If you used 50 cm3 of both solutions you would get five times as much energy given out to heat the mixture because you would be using five times as much of the reactants but it would have to raise the temperature of five times as much liquid so the temperature rise would be the same as before, 2 degrees.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website. For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
