Group 7: Halogens
Read our general notes on Risk Assessment
I would like to know the equations for halide reactions with silver nitrate. The halogen compounds involved are potassium bromide and sodium chloride. I am having difficulty finding them in chemistry books, and wondered if you could help.
These reactions are described in Topic 6 of the Nuffield Students’ Book, but the equations are not included in the text.
Here is an example:
KBr(aq) + AgNO3(aq) -> AgBr(s) + KNO3(aq)
or better, ionically:
Br–(aq) + Ag+(aq) -> AgBr(s)
I’ll leave you to construct similar equations using sodium chloride, instead of potassium bromide.

Risk assessment
Before attempting any practical work based on the advice and suggestions on this website, you must do the following. Identify any hazards, assess the risks from these hazards, and then decide appropriate control measures to reduce the risks. You must have these approved by those in authority in your school or college laboratory. Do not rely on what is said on this website.
For further guidance see our tutorial on Risk Assessment.
