History of atomic structure

Atomic structure time line
At this web site you can find an atomic structure time line which highlights key people in the development of ideas about atomic structure. Links from the table on the site allow you to find out more by visiting other web sites. (Some of the links do not work.)

It is not so much what we know that is interesting but how we know it. How do we know that atoms have a tiny nucleus? How do we know that atoms consist of protons, neutrons and electrons? How do we know that the electrons are arranged in shells? How do we know about s, p and d energy levels?

History of atomic structure tutorial with links
This structured tutorial has lots of questions and activities designed to help you trace the history of the development of theories of atomic structure. Throughout the tutorial there are links to web sites which provide the information you need to answer the questions or complete the tasks. Unfortunately quite a few of the links do not work.

Democritus and Dalton
This web site is specifically about the first ideas about atoms and the differences between the thinking of Democritus and Dalton. The site is presented as a study task in itself asking for more detail than you need even so the structure will help you as will the web links.

The sites you suggested were really helpful, and led me to more sites so I found all of the information I needed. I was a bit lost, but your search facility helped me enormously, thank you.
